Best of 2004: Body and Sole

As is our custom here at DailyCandy, the week between Christmas and New Year’s will be dedicated to the greatest hits of 2004. Since DailyCandy Boston is a little too new for greatest hits, we’re sharing some of the best of DailyCandy Everywhere, and look forward to seeing what you give us for 2005.

Hey, don’t even think about calling us slackers. We’re wooooorking here. Have a great holiday, and thank you for being such smart, opinionated, and excellent readers.

Body and Sole
Fatigue? Insomnia? Sluggishness?

Welcome to the human condition: Your baseline energy level is only slightly above that of a two-toed sloth. You’ve downgraded your definition of a good night’s sleep to four hours. Self-medicating is practically a religion.

At this point, you’ll try anything. May we suggest a newly imported treatment from Japan? Stick Visage de Layla’s Healing Soul packs on the soles of your feet at bedtime, tuck yourself in, and let the magic take hold. The healing power of such fascinating-sounding Chinese herbal ingredients as houttuynia cordata, saururus chinensis, and agaricus blazei murill mushroom is absorbed through your feet (which are apparently made more permeable by the abundance of sweat glands, more effective for that whole reflexology thing). It’s said the stuff will raise energy levels, ease aches, detoxify, treat sleeplessness, and, in at least one case, increase regularity. (Hallelujah!) Something to do with your chi (of course), but beyond that our eyes glazed over trying to read the fine print. In any case, it’s all totally safe.

And it can’t be worse than the Ambien/caffeine rollercoaster you’re currently on.

Countdown to the Big Night

Countdown to the Big Night

Yo, Cinderella.

You ready for the ball this weekend?

Oh, don’t cry. The Oscars clock struck early this year, and everyone was caught a little off guard. But that’s no excuse for looking like an evil stepsister.

If your fairy godmother isn’t answering her cellphone, you might want to ring Visage De Layla in Westwood instead and book an appointment for their luxuriously divine Cinderella Story treatment.

The pampering trifecta targets the face, eyes, and body — and will transform you into a royal version of your best self. A deep-cleansing facial banishes anything unwanted and gives your skin an aren’t-you-gorgeous glow. The wrinkle-attacking Eye Lift, the only treatment of its kind, will reduce dark circles and puffiness. It’s the next best thing to plastic surgery (and there’s no nasty recovery). Pressotherapy, the most advanced therapeutic body wrap imaginable, is a lymphatic drainage system that duplicates the action of massage, gets the circulation going, and improves cellulite. After one treatment, you’ll feel like you’re walking on air.

If you still want a little more, you greedy little princess, try Body Bronzing, a natural-looking airbrush tanner. (Want a secret? That’s how Adrien Brody zapped his “Pianist” pallor before winning the Oscar last year.)

Now all that’s left to do is figure out what you’re going to wear.

The first 20 DailyCandy readers to book a Visage de Layla Cinderella Story treatment will get 20% off the package. To schedule your appointment, call 310-475-1424; or book online at visagedelaylaskincare.com.

Visage de Layla

To our minds, the biggest problem with self-tanning is the “self” part – we invariably end ?up with streaks in hard-to-reach spots. The Fantasy Tan, in which an aesthetician applies ?a sunless tanning solution with an airbrush machine, is ideal for concealing tan lines or ?for damage control on self-tan streaks. We stood totally naked in front of aesthetician and ?owner Layla Fayyad while she covered our hands, elbows, and feet with hydrating cream ?to prevent them from turning orange. She sprayed every inch of our skin with tanner, ?following with a hair-dryer to se the solution. The next day, our morning shower revealed ?a beautiful Bermuda gold – more realistic than the slightly orange results we’d recently ?had with a self-tanning mist booth. But just three days (and many stained towels) later, ?the vacation was, regrettably over. $30.

To get that head-to-toe glow without the UV burn – or the self-tanning streaks – the ?aesthetician to see is Layla Fayyad. The jet-setting skin savant fine-tuned her air-brush ?bronzing technique at the famous Karita salon in Pairs and was recently tapped by Estée ?Lauder to tan this year’s best actor and actress Oscar nominees. Those who won’t be ?gracing the red carpet anytime soon can head to her Westwood salon, Visage de Layla, ?for the coveted just-back-from-St.-Barth’s look.

LA Confidential: Layla Fayyad

A highly trained skincare therapist and owner of Visage de Layla, a salon ?known for its therapeutic facials and body treatments, has a unique philosophy. While she ?believes that professional services are an essential part of skincare, a healthy beauty ?regimen between treatments holds the utmost importance. Services include ?microdermabrasion and chemical peels, but Visage de Layla encourages you to treat your ?epidermis with tender loving care when her staff is not there to do it for you. Fayyad has ?now expanded her collection, unveiling her own line of permiere products that include ?hydrating, replenishing, clinical, and specialty treatments that can nurture you, even ?between appointments.

Best Actor Adrien Brody more than made up for those arduous months making The ?Pianist. After indulging in a massage and sports pedicure, Brody received and air-?brushed tanning treatment from the Estée Lauder Oscar Spa at the Four Seasons. “He ?nibbled on some fruits while he was drying,” says Layla Fayyad, who applied the fake ?bronze. Later, of course, he took home the gold.

Cosmetic airbrushing is rapidly escalating in popularity. Celebrities and socialites are ?flocking to day spas to stand in enclosed booths while self-tanning lotion shoots from ?goof-proof multiple faucets. Even Oscar winner Adrien Brody proudly got his golden ?glow from airbrush tan expert Layla Fayyad, owner of the Los Angeles salon Visage de ?Layla. Some salons and day spas, such as Completely Bare in New York, even offer ?airbrushed “abs” and “cleavage.” A few beauty companies have tried creating at-home ?spray-on foundation, but none has made much of splash so far.

Feet First Los Angeles Layla Fayyad was experimenting with Microdermabrasion long before it became the ?darling of America’s beauty world. No surprise then to find that she’s ahead of the curve, ?extending the skin-smoothing technique to the feet at Visage De Layla,. Given our befoot ?lifestyle, these less than kissable feet were the perfect candidates. A pleasant tickling ?sensation ensued as a jet of corundum crystals (natural minerals- began sanding and ?vacuuming away rough skin and calluses. Then came the finishing touch – a moisturizing ?massage with Fayyad’s own Herbal Nova Cream, rich in vitamins A and E as well as ?alpha hydroxy acids, leaving them primed for a new pair of strappy summer sandals – or ?barefoot stroll through the garden (Microdermabrasion for the Feet, $125, 60 minutes)
