WHY YOGA IS GREAT FOR YOUR SKIN
This is the first in what we hope will be a series of posts on yoga and other practices/food/and products that explore total body wellness and health. Your body is not just one entity, but a series of systems that are intertwined, working independently and together to keep you alive and functioning. When one part of our body is not working properly, it’s bound to affect other parts…just as simple as that. Even though our main focus is on the skin, we believe that keeping your whole lifestyle healthy is imperative to keeping your skin looking great.
Keeping that in mind, why do we think Yoga is important in keeping your skin in top shape?
- Endorphins! Well, actually, it’s the release of endorphins, adrenaline, serotonin, and dopamine: all chemicals in our body that can make us feel fantastic. Improving your mood naturally has been known to counteract depression and reduce stress. As we all have experienced at some time or another, stress causes our face to break out (usually at the worst possible time). Thereby, reducing stress can possibly reduce breakouts.
- Yoga helps you sleep! Although all exercise has been known to help you sleep better at night, yoga is especially useful. All types of yoga seem to benefit sleep to some degree, but the most often recommended is “yoga nidra,” a form of deeply relaxing yoga and meditation created in India. If this seems too advanced, get a yoga routine that emphasizes stretching and calming yoga positions. So, what does sleep have to do with skin health? When we’re sleeping, our bodies take advantage of this quiet time to repair all the damage that was done to your skin during the day. More restful sleep means more old or damaged cells are replaced by healthy, younger-looking cells.
- Detox your skin! First of all, rigorous yoga makes you sweat, which is one way your body rids itself of toxins. Also, because of the all the specific twisting and bending movements performed during a yoga routine, you are massaging your organs and breathing harder. This gets more oxygen moving through your blood, which, of course, delivers it straight to your skin. Your skin needs the oxygen to continue its cycle of regeneration, which keeps your skin looking younger and healthier.
